Description

Located between Custer and Hill City on Hwy 16/385, Crazy Horse Memorial® is the world’s largest
Mountain Carving in progress. Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear and sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski set out
to create a Monument as a tribute to all North American Indians; after some discussion, Lakota warrior
Crazy Horse was chosen by the Elders to represent the history and values of their Nation. Crazy Horse

Memorial® has progressed through a great many changes since the June 3, 1948 dedication as a one-of-
a-kind educational and humanitarian project.

Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation began with a mission to protect and preserve the culture, tradition,
and living heritage if the North American Indians. The Foundation continues to demonstrate its
commitment to this endeavor by continuing the progress on the world’s largest sculptural undertaking
by carving a Memorial of Lakota leader, Crazy Horse; providing educational and cultural programming to
encourage harmony and reconciliation among all peoples and nations; acting as a repository for Native
American artifacts, arts, and crafts through THE INDIAN MUSEUM OF NORTH AMERICA® and THE NATIVE
AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL CENTER®; and establishing and operating THE INDIAN
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH AMERICA®.”
